Housing Plan Update Q4:2024

The Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) and the City of Chattanooga were awarded a $50 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Grant on July 16, 2024. On August 27, 2024, the Master Developer Agreement was executed between CHA and Columbia Residential as the Housing Implementation Entity.

Westside, we heard your dreams of mural art, jobs, and bringing people together. We felt your passion for education, well-being, and improved access. We agree - it's not just about new buildings, it's about investing in the people who live here. Safer streets, new parks, better housing, more opportunities — this transformation is being made possible because of our incredible community, and we’re making it happen — together. 💙

The Chattanooga Housing Authority brought together

The Chattanooga Housing Authority brought together over 20 incredible Chattanooga organizations for our first Service Provider Network meeting. It was so exciting to see the generosity, teamwork and dedication to Chattanooga's Westside neighborhood.

Our partners have pledged over $21 million in resources to support Westside residents over the next 8 years. That means more job training, healthcare, education, and services that will truly make a difference. And with Urban Strategies, Inc. (USI) leading the coordination of resident programs, every resource will be used where it’s needed the most.

This is what community looks like — people showing up, working together, and investing in a stronger Chattanooga. We’re so grateful for every partner who’s helping to make this possible!

For generations, the Grace Tree has been more than just a tree—it’s been a witness to our stories, our laughter, and our community’s strength. After being struck by lightning, it’s now dying and must be removed for safety. But before we say goodbye, let’s come together to honor its legacy.

A Community Hub, safer streets, better connections, more green spaces, and welcoming gathering places – each element reflects the community’s voice and vision.

We continue to listen. Guided by your vision, we are building a stronger, more vibrant Westside. Looking back at this map reminds us of the progress we’ve made and keeps us focused on making the neighborhood a place every resident is proud to call home.

📸 Honoring Our Legacy: The James A. Henry Center

This historic photo of a classroom inside the James A. Henry School (now the James A Henry Center) takes us back to a time when education was more than just lessons — it was about helping our children build a better future for themselves and the generations to come.

The James A. Henry School was formerly known as the Howard School, and was the first free public school in Hamilton County. It welcomed freed African Americans and refugees and became the first public school in Chattanooga to admit both African American and White students in 1872.

As we renovate the James A. Henry Center, we carry this proud legacy with us — ensuring our children have access to safe, inspiring spaces where they can continue to dream big and rise higher and higher.

There have been many heroes in the Westside; but today we're honoring one of our #sheroes, the late Shelia Jennings.

She was active with the Westside Community Development Corporation, The Weed and Seed program; and of the original Stop the Violence program in the Public Housing Development Sites. She was the president of College Hill Courts Resident Association and proprietor of HomeGirls Catering.

Shelia was one of our neighborhood's #trailblazers and we think she'd love what's happening in the place she made a difference in throughout her life.
