April Partner Spotlight: The Chattanooga Public Li April Partner Spotlight: The Chattanooga Public Library @chattlibrary

The Chattanooga Public Library began in 1887 as a small reading room with 4,200 books and expanded with support from Andrew Carnegie, opening its first public library in 1905. It grew alongside the community, becoming one of the first libraries in the Southeast to desegregate in 1949 and expanding into a larger central library system by the 1970s.

In recent years, the library has modernized its services with innovative spaces and programs while continuing to serve as a hub for education and community engagement, now offering thousands of programs and resources to residents each year.

The Chattanooga Public Library checks out over 1 million items and offers over 2,000 educational programs a year to all age ranges.

For College Hill Court residents, the library offers a pop-up library every 4th Thursday each month between 2:00 – 5:00 pm, where residents can sign up for a library card, check out books, participate in activities, and children ages 0-18 from 3pm-5pm can enjoy a meal provided by the YMCA

Last spring during a resident meeting, a resident Last spring during a resident meeting, a resident mentioned feeling disconnected from local services. Our team responded with three powerful words: “Tell me more.”

That simple phrase led to an insightful conversation. The resident shared challenges around transportation, childcare, and a desire for real neighborly connection. Because we listened, we were able to build trust, and practical plans took shape.

Fast forward to the One Westside redevelopment plan. With the help of our partners we have been able to:

Bring early childhood education and a medical clinic to One Westside, develop a traffic plan and lighting plan to improve access, and bring in community partners to host local events bringing the neighborhood together.

All that came about by us listening and saying, “Tell me more.”

Real transformation begins with listening. We are extremely grateful to all the Westside residents who took time to tell us more.

The Grace Tree has long been a quiet, steady prese The Grace Tree has long been a quiet, steady presence in College Hill Courts, a witness to cookouts, childhood games, afternoon talks, and everyday moments that make this neighborhood home.

A few years ago, Erika Roberts of the One Westside Imagination Team captured the spirit of the Grace Tree in a beautiful poem that still resonates today. As we say goodbye to this beloved tree, her words remind us that it’s more than just wood and leaves, it’s part of our shared history.

What’s your favorite memory of the Grace Tree?
